One fine day later in the year I'll come back and have the island to myself, and perhaps even spend the night there.

On Sunday wanting to make the best of the fine weather I went to Coniston and paddled out to Wild Cat Island (Peel Island). I found it satisfying to be journeying to a fictional island, though I remember very little about it from the books. Unlike the islands that I have been to on Derwent Water and Windermere Peel Island is more of a little tree covered rocky peak emerging from the waters of the lake making it seem larger that it actually is once you have landed and climbed a little way to the top. Because of its fame it is a favourite destination for canoeists and there were various canoes and kayaks already beached when I arrived. Another attractive feature of the island is the several shelters inlets where you can land and moor your boat out of sight from the main body of the lake. It is also a good swimming spot and several children were diving off the rocks giving masochistic squeals of delight as they hit the freezing lake water. One fine day later in the year I'll come back and have the island to myself, and perhaps even spend the night there. For a long time I have wanted to see the famous topiary gardens of Levens Hall and yesterday I went with Viv, for whom it was her second visit in the last month.
