How long is it since lockdown started? Three weeks? A month? Perhaps more. Weekends do longer mark the days; weeks do not end but stretch like chewing gum out and merge into a single month. The start of a month does still seem to be a kind of marker. The First of May still seems to have some of the significance that has slowly vanished from Saturday or Monday.

As the lockdown continues it becomes harder to take. There is no pleasure to be had in the bright spring weather, the sunshine, flowers and birdsong. Instead I live in an atmosphere of fear: not fear of the virus but fear of the people around me. The country has become introverted and intolerant. Any acts of generosity seem aimed at their own and little is said or done for other.
