Viv has told you about most of the things we did but the Kuda Lumping deserves a bit of explanation. It was a very local event just up the road from my house. The dancers dance themselves into trances and become possessed by spirits, usually animals and in particular the horse. Sometimes the dancers perform magical feats of strength or stick knives and skewers into themselves. We were not luck enough to see the latter but we did see a rather frightening horse/man and some of the audience collapse in trance. There is a dukun, magician supervising it all and bringing the dancers out of trance. I have put up some photos.
It was a good reminder that despite the appearance of modernity Java still retains its own culture, very different from our own.
Exams were the stuff of nightmare; papers in a foreign language and in one case the same question repeated five times, albeit in slightly different wording.
