After leaving the botanical gardens I took shared a taxi acting as bus to Kenningau from where I took a minibus to
Ranau, on the main route to Sandakan. Unfortunately I was given rather vague directions and missed the first bus. That meant a two hour wait by the side of the road. The journey across Sabah was at times spectacular as we got up into the hills where the oil palm plantations have not yet reached. In Sandakan I stayed in a small hotel, near the one I stayed with Kit and we famously ordered egg and chips to the disgust of the waitress. The next day I got up late and hung around until it was time to go to the airport, where I sat, drank coffee and used the wifi until the girls arrived. Madison had booked an Airbnb apartment, close to the airport but a long way from anything else. The apartment was in a block among many others and it took our driver a lot of circling around the estate to find it. It was a nice clean, well equipped flat but the hospitable welcome for three tired travellers was just a little lacking.
the next day we moved to a rather good backpackers lodge in town. Very backpacker. The walls were covered with paintings and trite epigrams. Though most of the paintings were actually quite good. I passed a girl painting a mermaid on the stairs.
Madison had hardly changed
