After finishing Religion in Java I found the recent piece in Inside Indonesia about the rise of Pentacostalism rather interesting. Geerz does not discuss the Christian minority but they do make up around 10% of the population as a whole. It will be interesting to see if converts are only from the existing Christian churches or if any abangan Muslims will cross over.
I have now moved on to The Indonesian Reader, a collection of important historical writings and documents from the earliest inscribed stones to post-tsunami Ache. I used it a lot but there must still be more than half the chapters still to read.
A piece in New Scientist about the physical power of words to hurt remined me of my thoughts on illness as metaphor. You might like to play the game of ostracism. It is very like every PE class I remember from my school days.
