My brother Bob arrives tomorrow and will be staying the night and visiting some of the sights of Stoke on Trent. Amid the dereliction of the pottery industry there are many. I am making Bob a mutton curry. Mutton is hard to come by in most butchers but the big Asian supermarket in Stoke sells it, and it is ideal for curries, though, as might be expected, it is much tougher than lamb and takes a lot of cooking. This is the first time I have bought meat, other than game, for quite some time. I make the excuse that if we are going to eat sheep we ought to let them grow up and have a pleasant life amid some of the most beautiful scenery in the land before sending them off to be turned into curry.
I find vegetarianism problematic because we live in a largely carnivorous world.
The balance of nature depends on things eating each other. I do think we eat far too much meat and our treatment of animals is often appalling. That is once you accept the premise that it is morally wrong to treat animals cruelly and probably the majority of people in the world don't, or never give it any thought.
Peter Singer's main concern has always been factory farming and vegetarianism as an ideal comes second. I go along with that.
The curry already smells delicious.
Last night I watched the film Primer. I fell asleep just over half way through - not the best recommendation you can give a film - but found it very interesting and rather good. There is very little action, a tortuous plot and fast complicated dialogue. One lapse of concentration and you have no idea of what is going on. If you fall asleep you have even less than that; a minus idea of what is going on. If anyone wants to pass a frustrating hour or two, or go to bed early, this is one to try.
